Dear Members,

Sad news for all.

Beryl Kennedy died peacefully, in her home surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday 29/08/2009. At the age of 92, Beryl had lived life to the full until the past few weeks when her health failed her.

Beryl, Physiotherapist & Feldenkrais Practitioner, completed the Sydney 1 Feldenkrais Professional Training Programme (FPTP) with Frank Wildman.

For those who knew Beryl she will be remembered as a person with vitality and humour and a strong advocate of the Feldenkrais Method. She was pivotal in influencing the student population for the first Sydney FPTP and continued to prompt people to pursue the Feldenkrais Method as a process in their healing and learning.

Beryl was president of the NSW Feldenkrais Interest Group (FIG) for many years and ensured that there was an arena for the public to taste the Method. In 2008 Beryl shared her experience in a Back Care workshop at a FIG open day.

Beryl was an inspirational person with a positive approach to human existence, and an urge to share her knowledge and experience with others.

A number of clients have requested that I offerHICAPS (Health Industry Claims and Payments Service) and EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale) services.

I am pleased to announce that HICAPS and EFTPOS are now available at my studio.

HICAPS is an electronic health claiming and payments system that lets you process your claim when you pay for your individual consultation. This saves you the time it takes either to:

make a trip to your private health fund branch, or

to fill in forms and send your claim in via Australia Post.

Classes and courses will still need to be claimed by presenting your receipt to your health insurer.

EFTPOS allows you to pay for goods and services electronically, for example to pay for your consultation using your credit card.
When you access your account (cheque, savings, credit or debit) electronically to make a payment, this called an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) at the Point Of Sale (POS).
This saves you the time it takes to stop at the bank and withdraw cash to pay for your session.

To offer these services I needed to engage an electrician and cable layer to install the necessary phone line and powerpoints. There are also ongoing costs to run the system.

If you would like to utilise HICAPS and/or EFTPOS a service fee of $1.80 (including gst) will be added to your account.
In order to cover increasing costs the service fee will be increased annually in May by CPI plus 1%.

It’s exciting to see the red flowers tipped with gold.

They are distinctly different from the normal yellow flowers that most Australian wattles have.

Scarlet Blaze, one of the twentieth century’s most surprising and significant horticultural discoveries is Victoria’s Centenary of Federation floral emblem.

The blood-red variety of the Cinnamon Wattle (Acacia leprosa) was found growing in a Victorian forest in 1995 by two bush walkers. They took cuttings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, which manages a specialised plant conservation program, thereby saving many plants from probable extinction.

The Garden’s horticultural staff successfully propagated the extraordinary hybrid from cuttings rather than seed in order to preserve the unusual blood-red colouring. When grown from seed, the red colouring reverts to the more traditional yellow flower.

Scarlet Blaze will be launched through Plant Growers Australia later in 2001 onto the horticultural market. It is estimated that the plant may generate at least 20,000 sales, with an interest from Europe, the US and Asia.

Dr Phillip Moors, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, said: “It is fitting that Scarlet Blaze has been chosen as the State’s floral emblem because its discovery and subsequent conservation has made horticultural history”.

Worldwide there are about 1200 acacia species, of which 950 are in Australia. Acacia leprosa is regarded as a particularly hardy large shrub or small tree with a weeping, slender habit. It can grow throughout much of Australia, flowering in August and September, and is an ideal home garden plant.

In response to feedback from evening clients, extra external lighting has been installed at the studio.

I hope that the new solar powered LED lights will provide welcoming light for after the sun goes down.

Recently the street light in front of the studio has been unreliable, on on some nights and off on others.
Usually it provides enough light to walk to the front steps.
A sensor light then provides extra light for the waiting area.

A much bigger project is being carefully planned to completely renovate and improve the comfort and visual appeal of the street front.

I hope the new lights are adequate for now.

My body and brain are improving as I get older.

My movement, adaptability and resilience in my thirties are all better than in my twenties.
I am looking forward to even more comfortable forties, fifties and beyond.

I feel very lucky to have been introduced to Feldenkrais early in life.

I witness many improvements in the quality of life and movement in people from all age groups.

My oldest client was 95, and conquered her fear of falling by learning how to get down to the floor and up again, safely.

My youngest client at the moment is 10 months old, and I have worked with even younger humans.

I include information about the workshop (below) to offer another perspective on the Feldenkrais Method.

Frank was the Educational Director of my training program, and it would be a treat to attend this workshop if you happen to be in Oregon, US when it’s on!

Change Your Age: the Feldenkrais Method®
A weekend course with Frank Wildman, PhD, GCFT

YOU REALLY CAN CHANGE YOUR AGE

What makes a person old? Some people think it’s wrinkles; others think it’s stodgy attitudes. But really, the culprit is our habits. When we unlearn these habits and create new ones, we make our bodies and minds younger, stronger, and more flexible. In essence, we create a more youthful and intelligent body at any age.

The good news is that we can learn new habits that make our bodies and minds more agile and fit. We may then begin to enjoy the qualities of exploration, ease, variety and joy in our movements, as we did when we were children and, before that, infants. The easy-to-learn movement sequences in this workshop will help you break away from physically limiting habits and steer you toward feelings that you ordinarily would experience at your best—and perhaps your youngest—moments.

In this workshop, you will be doing several movement sequences, part of the new Change Your Age program, designed to de-age your joints, muscles and brain. Throughout the two days, you may progressively feel younger as you learn to move with greater ease, agility, balance, and coordination.

Chronic pain and a sense of being powerless and trapped in a body that doesn’t feel like it belongs is, unfortunately, an experience that many people have.

It can seem that nothing can make a real difference.

A process or approach that improves understanding of what drives the pain and allows resilience to develop can empower the person.

I find that it helps to demystify pain, by explaining how pain is felt in our bodies and working out with each client how to best manage their pain.

Understanding that all pain is real and the reasons why things hurt can really help. For example, learning about:

what movements or situations increase or decrease pain

how pain is produced by the brain

how body systems respond to injury and what happens after the injury

how this contributes to the ongoing experience of pain

why pain can persist after an injury when there has been heaps of time to heal

Understanding pain can give people the power to challenge pain and to find new ways of seeing and experiencing it.

This can lead to management strategies that significantly improve quality of life and ability to engage with pleasurable or meaningful activities.

And of course reduce or eliminate the pain problem.
